Four crops

Food security and export upside

Rows of cassava plants with broad palmate leaves on red laterite soil, with two farm workers at the edge of a misty forest in early morning
Food security

Cassava

A staple with steady demand for food, feed and processing. Target yield of 20 to 25 tonnes of fresh roots per hectare.

Tall tasselled maize on both sides of a red earth farm track, with an agronomist walking between the rows at golden hour
Food security

Maize

Grain for food and animal feed. Target yield of 3 to 5 tonnes per hectare under mechanised management with improved seed.

Shaded cocoa grove with ripe yellow and orange pods on the trunks, and a worker inspecting a pod
Commercial and export

Cocoa

A tree crop with export potential. Target of 0.8 to 1.0 tonne of dry beans per hectare at maturity, from year 4 to 5.

Branch of red and yellow cashew apples with nuts hanging below, and orchard rows with a worker carrying a crate behind
Commercial and export

Cashews

A tree crop with export potential. Target of 0.5 to 0.9 tonne of raw nuts per hectare at full maturity, around year 7.

Why Edo

Strong ground for staple and tree crops

Staple demand

Cassava and maize have established demand for food, feed and processing across the region.

Export crops

Cocoa and cashews offer commercial and export potential as tree crops reach maturity.

Value kept local

Linking commercial farming, processing and storage with local smallholders can keep more value within Edo State.

Phased plan

Built in two stage gated phases

Phase 1

Development

NGN 150m to 250m

A 75 to 120 hectare cassava and maize pilot and a 10 tonne per day primary processing unit.

Phase 2

Expansion

A larger investment, sized on Phase 1 results, for cocoa and cashew plantations, wider cassava and maize, more processing and storage, and the outgrower program.

Impact targets

What Phase 1 aims to deliver

15 to 55direct farm jobs targeted in Phase 1, plus processing staff
75 to 120 hacassava and maize pilot area targeted
10 t/dayprimary processing capacity planned
1,000 to 1,500 hatarget area across both phases
